Galway Pet Services is delighted to announce a new service offered to caring owners and their pets. We are opening a new purpose designed Dog Day Care facility in West Galway. The 1,600 square feet facility is in Tonabrocky on the Letteragh Road. It is within a 5 minute drive of Knocknacarra and Westside and less than a 10 minute drive from Salthill.
Dog Day Care will help you meet your dog's needs for attention, activity and supervision. It will provide a perfect solution for bored, lonely or high-energy dogs with busy owners who work away from home all day.
Daycare for dogs works similarly to daycare for children. You drop off your dog in the morning or we may provide pick-up in special cases, and he/she gets to play, get walks, socialize, snack and nap while you’re off working or getting things done. Then you pick him/her up at the end of the workday or again in special cases we may drop your pet back. Then instead of your dog greeting you after your workday with loads of pent-up energy, he/she will be pleasantly tired and ready to relax with you all evening.
Dogs(with the owners consent) will be giving group walks throughout the day. This is to provide the dogs with toilet breaks, provide them with the natural sniffs of the outdoors and allow them some fresh air. There is a very quiet Cul de Sac next door to the facility which is perfect for the group walks.
Benefits of Dog Day Care
You could think of most dogs today as “unemployed.” Dogs have been traditionally bred for jobs—typically in hunting, livestock herding, protection or guarding. But their main job today is a Couch Potato! Unfortunately, boredom and excess energy are two common reasons for behaviour problems in pet dogs.
The main benefits of the Day Care is:
- -Relief from boredom.
- -Relief from loneliness and the anxiety that loneliness can cause in dogs (including separation anxiety).
- -Socialisation with people and other dogs.
- -Much-needed exercise and socialization with other dogs.
- -Prevention of developing destructive behaviour in the house when unsupervised.
- -Relief from guilt for pet parents who feel badly about leaving their dogs home alone all day.
Is Daycare right for your dog?
Ideal candidates for daycare are healthy, spayed or neutered and well-socialized dogs who really enjoy other dogs and seek interaction with them at every opportunity. Young dogs often adjust to the daycare environment better than older ones. If your dog is a regular at dog parks, and she plays a lot and enjoys it there, then daycare is probably ideal. Each dog must go through an assessment prior to admittance to the facility.
Please contact us before bringing your dog to the centre to arrange a time for the free assessment. To ensure your dog is able to attend our Daycare, they must be fully vaccinated, including for Kennel Cough, please ask your vet if you have any queries as they will know how to fully vaccinate and protect your dog. Also dogs can only be accepted 2 weeks after they receive their Kennel Cough vaccination. Please bring your vaccinations card on the day of the assessment and make sure they are up to date.
Unfortunately, we will not be able to accept any dog that has any aggressive tendencies. Your dog will be slowly integrated into daycare by allowing it see the other dogs from the assessment area, then joined by one quiet dog in the assessment area, then another dog and so on until it is ready to be introduced to the entire group for fun and games. If he/she shows any signs of stress or poor body language then the test dog(s) will be taken away and we will try again after your dog calms down. Remember please ensure you bring your vaccination card also a collar or harness and please ensure your dog is on the lead at all times.
Please check the Services Page for information on costs.
If possible please print off this application form below and bring it to the centre when coming for an assessment.
